Trossard hadn’t found the net for us since the 4-1 win over Aston Villa last December – and run of 26 games without scoring – but he picked his moment to end that drought perfectly.

He had come close to closing twice in the early stages after he saw a header tipped onto the crossbar by Mads Hermansen, before hitting the upright seconds later, but he was on target to thread the ball through a thicket of legs to win us the points.

GOLDEN GLOVE SECURED

However the result hinged on a key moment at the other end, when David Raya once again this season came to our rescue. Having had little to do all game – other than a smart stop at the end of the first half to push away a diving header from Taty Castellanos – on 77 minutes Matheus Fernandes was slipped in on goal and everyone inside the London Stadium held their breath.

But Raya stayed big and managed to block the attempt with his leg, keeping the scores level and paving the way for us to go up the other end and score six minutes later. It also proved to be the save that secured him outright ownership of the Premier League Golden Glove award thanks to his 18th clean sheet from 36 matches.

David Raya completes Golden Glove hat-trick

GABRIEL’S BIG BLOCK

The shutout that secured it though may only have been secured thanks to a heroic piece of defending by Gabriel, that will largely be forgotten given what occurred straight after it. In the 93rd minute, a long ball into the box was headed downwards into Callum Wilson’s path, who had taken up a dangerous position inside the box.

Swivelling, he struck the ball sweetly towards the target, and saw the ball fly through Kai Havertz’s legs, but thankfully Big Gabi managed to react in time to stick out a leg and divert the effort wide of the target. It led to the corner that saw Wilson drive the ball over the line, VAR’s intention and a huge sigh of relief, but that might not have got to stage had if it wasn’t for our Brazilian’s vital block.

500 UP FOR MIKEL

The win would have been incredibly sweet for Mikel Arteta, who was taking charge of his 350th match for us since arriving in December 2019. When you add that to his total of 150 appearances for us as a player, it meant that Mikel has now been involved in 500 Gunners games – and a victory on his milestone matches leaves us two wins away from the championship that hasd eluded him so far in N5.

He has extended his incredible record in London derbies with this success at West Ham, as among managers to take charge of at least 20 capital clashes, our boss has the best points-per-game rate (2.1) and the best win rate (63%) in Premier League history. He has now won 45 of 72, losing only 10 of them in that time. He can extend that record further this season when he takes us to Crystal Palace on the final day – one that he hopes will be his most memorable day as a Gunner.

PRESSURE BACK ON

The victory sees us reinstate our five-point lead at the top of the table, with us now able to enjoy an eight-day gap between games before we complete our home league campaign against Burnley a week on Monday.

Attention will turn to Manchester City’s next game against Crystal Palace, with the UEFA Conference League finalists heading to the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday. And if the Eagles could do us a favour and deny City the victory, then we would go into that game with the Clarets knowing a win would see us crowned champions.

If City win, then the championship won’t be decided until the final day when we head to Selhurst Park for our own encounter with Palace

Copyright 2026 The Arsenal Football Club Limited.
