Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Fabian Hurzeler has accused Arsenal of taking too long over corners when they are leading in a match.<\/p>\n
Hurzeler has called for a clampdown on wasted time at set pieces as his side attempt to dent the table-topping side\u2019s Premier League title challenge at the Amex Stadium on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n
Arsenal scored both of their goals from corners in Sunday\u2019s 2-1 home win over Chelsea. Mikel Arteta\u2019s side have scored 16 goals from corners overall this season, the joint-most by any side in a single campaign, alongside Oldham Athletic in 1992-93, West Bromwich Albion in 2016-17, and Arsenal themselves in 2023-24.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt disturbs the rhythm of the game and there are no clear rules any more, how much time you can spend for a corner, how much time you can spend for a throw-in,\u201d Hurzeler said of the debate about set pieces dominating the Premier League narrative during his press briefing on Tuesday for Arsenal\u2019s visit.<\/p>\n
\u201cSome of the blockings or the way teams are blocking, there is no clear rule. Sometimes the referee whistles and it\u2019s a foul, sometimes he doesn\u2019t whistle. I think that\u2019s why we have this topic at the moment, but for me the main topic is make a clear rule for how much time you can waste for a corner, for a throw-in, for a free-kick.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo-one recognises it, but when Arsenal have a corner and they are leading, sometimes they spend over a minute just to take a corner,\u201d he continued. \u201cTherefore we just have to make clear rules, because then in the end we have a natural game time of 50 minutes instead of sometimes 65 minutes. The game is changing so much if you don\u2019t have natural game time for all the games. We analyse it and the difference is just massive.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am of the opinion that every supporter who pays a lot of money to watch our games should see the same natural game time. They want to see a football event, they don\u2019t want to see maybe 50 minutes a game and for 40 minutes it\u2019s not running.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe won\u2019t change these rules immediately, so we know how important set pieces are. I always mention they can be game changer, so we have to use it as well, be very efficient in scoring goals, more efficient in creating chances from corners and free-kicks and always try to defend them well.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hurzeler says he will freshen up his side against Arsenal after naming his oldest starting XI of the season for back-to-back wins at Brentford (2-0) and at home to Nottingham Forest on Sunday (2-1).<\/p>\n
