Smith’s key role protecting Patrick Mahomes

Smith, 25, has been the Chiefs’ starting right guard since they selected him in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of the University of Tennessee. He’s started all 67 regular-season games in his career and earned his first Pro Bowl nod in 2024 after playing 97 percent of Kansas City’s offensive snaps.

He was also one of the league’s most disciplined offensive linemen last season, flagged just seven times all year, according to Pro Football Reference. That included four holding calls, two false starts, and one declined penalty. By comparison, Texans tackle Laremy Tunsil led the NFL with 17 accepted penalties.

And when it comes to protecting Mahomes, Smith delivered. Per Pro Football Focushe didn’t allow a single sack in 2024. He did give up five quarterback hits and 26 total pressures, but kept the Chiefs’ $500 million man upright when it mattered most.

Smith’s extension is just the latest move in Kansas City’s ongoing effort to stay atop the AFC — and in Super Bowl contention — for years to come.
