“Swimming does wonders for Shani” | The Arsenal Foundation | News

The Arsenal Foundation has helped Step by Step Kids, a charity that provides activities for children with disabilities. One local mum tells us how the swimming sessions we funded have helped her daughter Shani in and out of the water.

“I’m 37 years old and living in the London Borough of Hackney. As a busy mum of five wonderful children, most of my time revolves around caring for them. Our second child, eight-year-old Shani, has Down syndrome.

“Being a parent to a child with Down syndrome comes with its own set of challenges. Ensuring Shani gets the support she needs, especially in activities she loves, is like a really intense balancing act, given the needs of my other four children. Honestly, we often struggle to make ends meet – especially when it comes to supporting Shani with all the ‘extras’.

“When I first learned about Step by Step Kids when Shani was just four years old. It was from a friend whose teenage daughter volunteered there, and I was particularly intrigued to discover that the sessions were either heavily subsidised or completely free. Shani joined their weekly Sunday Club and loved it. I was so happy that she was having the opportunity to learn new skills and make friends in a supportive environment.

“Last year, Shani started attending the swimming sessions. They are nothing short of fantastic. Each Tuesday, Shani is picked up by her devoted volunteer carer and joins her peers in the minivan that transports them to the pool. There, her carer helps Shani change into swimwear and they enter the pool together. The sessions last about an hour and are taught by amazing instructors – Shani has already learned basic swimming techniques and made some lovely friends, which helped build her confidence tremendously. Step by Step staff and volunteers are not only attentive to the children but also make sure we, as parents, feel supported and informed through parent questionnaires and monthly newsletters.

“What I find so amazing about Step by Step’s swimming sessions is the fact that all carers are volunteers who donate hours of their time to help the children. The care and pure love they radiate towards the children is outstanding – not to mention their professionalism and confidentiality.

“Swimming does wonders for Shani. Her confidence has soared, she has improved her overall health and coordination, and she made great friends along the way. For me, knowing that Shani is in capable hands is incredibly reassuring.

“Also, having a structured activity like this after school is incredibly beneficial for our entire family. With Shani occupied and enjoying herself, it provides us with some much-needed respite during the week. We have the chance to focus on other family needs and spend quality time with our other children, effectively managing our busy schedules and creating a more harmonious home environment. Shani comes back from her swimming sessions with her face glowing, and the whole family is thrilled to see her so happy!

“I firmly believe it’s important for football clubs to give back to their communities. Supporting charities and initiatives like Step by Step can make a real difference in people’s lives.”
