It was a productive return from the international break for Fabio Vieiraas his Hamburg side saw out a 1-1 draw with 10 players against Augsburg.
Fabio played the full 90 minutes of the Bundesliga contest on Saturday, as HSV recovered from a goal down and then saw out a useful point, a man down for almost half an hour of the second half. With six games to play, Fabio and his teammates sit 12th – six points clear of the relegation play-off place.
Jakub Kiwior may have played every minute across two huge matches for Poland last week, but the defender continued his regular game time by playing the full 2-2 draw between Porto and Famalicao in the Liga Portugal on Saturday. The Dragaos took a 2-1 lead late on but were pegged back in the dying seconds, forced to settle for a share of the spoils on home soil, which sees them five points clear at the top of the table – but having played an additional game on second-placed Sporting CP.
In France, Ethan Nwaneri was a 73rd-minute substitute for Marseille in a frustrating defeat at Monaco in Ligue 1 on Sunday night. A goalless first half was followed by the hosts taking a two-goal lead, the second coming from former Gunner Folarin Balogun shortly after Ethan had entered the fray. The teenage midfielder’s presence helped OM back into the match as they made it 2-1, but Monaco held on to take three points, which drew them level on points with Marseille, who maintain a superior goal difference in fourth.
Due to the Premier League taking a back seat for a further week as the FA Cup took centre stage, Reiss Nelson and Brentford were without a game and next feature at home to Everton this Saturday.
Further down the English pyramid, League Two saw a duo of young Gunners both claim important victories as the campaign reaches its business end. Good Friday represented the first of a two-part Easter weekend across the EFL, and Ismeal Cabia played the full 90 minutes in Shrewsbury Town’s 1-0 home win over Tranmere Rovers. Louie Copley was also on the winning side as survival-hunting Crawley Town secured back-to-back wins with a huge 2-0 success against relegation rivals Newport County, playing 54 minutes in south Wales.
Charles Sagoe Jr was in action for Kalmar as the Allsvenskan season began in Sweden. The top-flight opener resulted in a slender 1-0 home defeat by Vasteras on Sunday, Charles playing the full 90 minutes.
Lucas Nygaard’s Brabrand were in Danish Second Division competition on Thursday, and secured a tremendous 4-1 win at home to Helsingor. Will Sweet was not involved for Dagenham & Redbridge in the National League South on Friday, in a 3-0 defeat by promotion-hunting Hornchurch.
From our Women’s loanees, Cecily Wellesley-Smith played a beneficial full 90 for Rosengard on Sunday despite her side going down 2-1 at home to AIK in the Allsvenskan. Moving across Sweden to Hammarby, it was a huge Europa Cup semi-final win over Sparta Prague on Thursday, as Vivienne Lia’s side won 2-0 to secure a 5-2 aggregate victory. Vivienne was not involved in the second leg, but her club have now set up a two-legged final with compatriots Hacken which starts later this month and runs into May.
Rosa Kafaji was ineligible for Brighton & Hove Albion as the Seagulls overcame the Gunners 2-0 on Sunday in the FA Cup quarter-finals, while there was no WSL action this week – meaning no football over the weekend for Aston Villa’s Jenna Nighswonger or Everton’s Laila Harbert.
In the WSL 2, Jessie Gale was a second-half substitute for Bristol City on a long trip to Durham on Sunday. Jessie came on in the 65th minute of the contest, but the Robins were denied all three points by a stoppage-time Durham penalty. Fresh from lifting silverware last week, Maddy Earl played twice from the bench for Glasgow City in midweek and the weekend, with 1-0 home defeats by Hibernian and Hearts.
