Former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey has announced his retirement from football aged 35.
The Welshman spent 11 years at Emirates Stadium, making 369 appearances and scoring 64 goals – two of which were memorable winning efforts in the 2015 and 2017 FA Cup finals.
Aaron signed for us from his hometown club Cardiff City in 2008, and having initially established himself in the first-team as a teenager, he recovered from a broken leg suffered against Stoke City in November 2010 to do so again, following short loans at Nottingham Forest and the Bluesbirds again.
In 2014 he got his hands on the first of three FA Cups with us, when he netted in extra-time to help us beat Hull City 3-2 and seal our first piece of silverware for nine years. That capped a fine campaign in which he was named our Player of the Season as he scored 16 times in 34 games.
12 months later he played all 90 minutes at Wembley as we got our name on the trophy again by beating Aston Villa 4-0, and then in 2017 he once again popped up with the winner as we defeated Chelsea 2-1. A year later, he received our Player of the Season award for the second time, making him one of only 12 players in our history to have won it on multiple occasions.
Aaron’s time in N5 came to an end in 2019 as he opted to join Juventus, where he won a Serie A title in his first season in Italy. He would later also play for Rangers, Nice and Mexican side Pumas UNAM, as well as return to Cardiff, where he dipped his toe into management for the first time in a caretaker capacity at the end of last season.
As well as his exploits in red and white, he will go down as one of Wales’ greatest ever players, winning 84 caps for his country and playing a major role in their fairytale run to the semi-finals of Euro 2016, where he was named in the Team of the Tournament.
A second major finals came when he helped the Red Dragons reach Euro 2020, before they reached their first World Cup in 58 years in 2022. He also represented Great Britain at the 2012 Olympic Games.
