During the AFC Divisional Round matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Houston Texans, many flags were thrown against the Texans and in favor of the Chiefs that were indeed a bit questionable. One that was thrown against Texans cornerback Kris Boyd, however, was justified.
Kris Boyd explains why he threw his helmet and shoved his coach
Just as the game kicked off, the Chiefs got into great field position after Nikko Remigio made a 63-yard punt return. It was Boyd who finally made the tackle to stop Remigio getting any further. Unfortunately for the Texans, he subsequently cost them another 15 yards.
After he made the tackle on Remigio, which also forced a fumble, rather than attempting to recover it along with his teammates, Boyd celebrated on the field and threw his helmet to the ground. That move earned his team an Unnecessary Roughness penalty and the Chiefs recovered the fumble.
“I was turnt, I was turnt,” Boyd said about throwing the helmet. “First play, kick off, they thought they had a big play, and I got the ball out. And as I’m getting up, I look at the screen, I see nothing but white and they’re all pointing that way.”
“So I was like, ‘We got the ball, too. Turnover.’ I was just turnt. You’ll see, I ran up to everybody, getting ready to shake their hand. But then someone grabbed me and was like, ‘Hey, nah, that’s not good. You got a flag and it’s their ball.’”
To make matters worse, Boyd then approached the sidelines and shoved special teams coordinator Frank Ross.
According to Boyd, he was simply reacting in the heat of the moment ant out of passion. He apologized for his actions and he and Ross were later seen hugging, so it seems he has been forgiven.
“I love everybody here, I love my coaches, I would never disrespect nobody,” Boyd said. “I love Frank. I’m a God-fearing man. I respect everybody in that building.”
Texans special teamer Kris Boyd started the game with a “silly” penalty after ripping his helmet off. He then appeared to shove Special Teams Coach Frank Ross.
“Lit emotions. Thought it was a great play. It was a dumb play.”
