After being forced off in the Kansas City Chiefs’ week 15 victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, tests have shown that quarterback Patrick Mahomes did indeed suffer an injury in the fourth quarteras had been suspected.
What injury does Patrick Mahomes have?
According to sources close to NFL Network journalist Ian Rapoport, Mahomes has been diagnosed with a “mild high-ankle sprain” after being caught in a Browns sandwich between Dalvin Tomlinson and Michael Hall Jr.
Although Rapoport claims the 29-year-old will “still be considered week-to-week,” the typical recovery time for such an injury is two weeks at the very, very leastwhich suggests Mahomes is likely to miss at least a couple of gameswhich would see Carson Wentz fill in.

Kansas City Chiefs upcoming schedule
After their victory over the Browns, the Chiefs still have three regular-season games to playat home to the Houston Texans and away to the Pittsburgh Steelers and Denver Broncos.
Week 16: Texans, Dec 22
Week 17: @ Steelers, Dec 25
Week 18: @ Broncos, Jan 5
At the time of writing, the week 18 match-up against the Browns is just under three weeks away, which could be a realistic target for his return. The 2024 NFL playoffs begin a week further down the line, although the Chiefs, who have already qualified for the postseason, could clinch the No. 1 seed in the AFC. That would give them a bye to the divisional playoffswhich take place on the third weekend in January.
Either way, coach Andy Reid will be desperate to have Mahomes fit and available as soon as possible as the Chiefs chase a historic Super Bowl three-peat.
