Travis Hunter is the NFL’s hottest rookie. A two-way sensation that could change the way the game is played, the Jaguars’ No. 2 overall draft pick is looking to play both wide receiver and cornerback full time in the professional league.
Hunter was successful playing both roles in college, but the NFL is a different ball game. The Jaguars plan to honor his wishes, although they’re planning to ease him into it, starting off playing more time at one position than the other. Even still, NFL veteran Travis Kelce isn’t so sure about this plan.
Kelce warns Hunter: NFL will make him “miserable”
As he enters his 13th NFL season, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is embracing a leadership role, guiding younger players and offering insight into the challenges of the league. On the “Bussin’ with the Boys” podcast, Kelce praised Travis Hunter’s talent but expressed skepticism about Hunter’s ability to thrive on both offense and defense in the NFLas he did in college. In fact, he thinks the NFL will make Hunter “miserable”.
Hunter’s Alma Mater, the Colorado Buffaloes beat Kelce’s Alma Mater, the Cincinnati Bearcats 34-23 in 2024 thanks in large part to Hunter, who had nine catches for 153 yards and two touchdowns on offense. Kelce was discussing the win with “Bussin’ with the Boys” hosts Will Compton and Taylor Lewan when he weighed in on Hunter and his future role in the NFL.
“Travis Hunter, man, the guy’s really good,” Kelce said, before warning that opposing teams are likely to exploit his two-way role.
“Both sides? See, that’s the thing. I don’t know how they’re gonna divvy it out,” said Kelce. “Because teams are gonna be going after him. They are gonna try to make his day miserable.”
“If he plays corner, they’re gonna run deep balls at him all dayjust to try to get him tired,” Kelce said. “Why wouldn’t you attack him that way?”
While confident in Hunter’s potential, Kelce delivered a clear message: the NFL will test him, hard. Hunter will make his NFL debut on Sunday, September 7 when the Jaguars open the season at home against the Carolina Panthers. And the Chiefs will try to prove Kelce right on Monday, October 6, when they face the Jaguars in Week 5.
