The beach volleyball player Pablo Herrera He closed his professional career on Friday with his inseparable Adrián Gavira, after imposing himself with authority in the European Wevza Tournament played at the Pinar de Castellón beach, and which has meant the farewell at home after a dilated and successful career.
The Castellón, the only World beach volleyball player with six Olympic Games, including the last ones in Paris, has said goodbye to the elite sport surrounded by his family and friends after getting on the podium for the last time at age 42.
In the final, Herrera-Gavira, who have formed a couple for the last 16 years, defeated with great solvency (21-12 and 21-13) to the Spaniards Pablo Pérez and Nathan Matos in the Great Stadium on the sand with capacity for 400 spectators built on the beach of Pinar.
The farewell tribute, Herrera did not hide her emotion after participating in her last competition surrounded by family and friends.
“So far I have arrived, I have given everything I could and even something else. All this would have been impossible without the support of my family, who has renounced many things so that I could fulfill my dream. They have been the best years of my life and now I want to spend time to my family,” he said.
Herrera was put at the service of public institutions, who wanted to accompany the player in their farewell, to continue promoting and grow the beach volleyball. “I have to step aside, but I expect many tournaments here at home to promote this sport that has been my life,” he said.
Herrera, finally, has left the door open to play regional tests with his brother Daniel, with whom last week he played a test of the National Volleyball Circuit also in Castellón.
