Arsenal technical director James Ellis to leave club after just seven months in role

Arsenal technical director James Ellis is set to leave the club, just seven months after being promoted to the position.

Ellis was chosen to become technical director last summer, having previously been Arsenal’s head of recruitment. The promotion was designed to provide support for new sporting director Andrea Berta, as well as offering continuity in a time of considerable change.

Arsenal’s recruitment department has been through a number of changes of late — Edu left abruptly in November 2024, and was followed in the summer by his assistant, Jason Ayto. As head of recruitment, Ellis was a key part of Edu’s ‘football intelligence’ team.

When Berta joined, the Arsenal hierarchy felt that the Italian’s focus needed to be on first-team transfers. Ellis was promoted to provide support in other areas that had previously fallen under Edu’s remit.

Of late, Ellis has played a major role in the reshaping of Arsenal’s academy recruitment and was expected to play a significant part in the process of identifying a successor for Per Mertesacker as academy manager.

Why is this move such a surprise?

The timing of this move comes as a considerable surprise, especially given that Ellis is relatively new in the role of technical director.

Ellis was a key part of Edu’s recruitment team, and since the arrival of Berta, has undertaken extensive work in reshaping Arsenal’s academy recruitment. He has been credited with influential roles in delivering recent signings such as the Quintero twins and Irish teenager Victor Ozhianvuna.

As part of his work with the academy, he was also instrumental in helping persuade Max Dowman to commit his long-term future to the club.

Perhaps with Mertesacker having announced his departure at the end of the season, Arsenal’s leadership are taking the opportunity to evolve the structure.

At a time of considerable flux, the role of technical director was effectively reintroduced to retain Ellis. This move would appear to be an indication that Arsenal now see the position as superfluous.
