Aaron Rodgers has been heavily linked with the Pittsburgh Steelers for what feels like forever now, although the veteran quarterback has yet to sign on the dotted line as Russell Wilson’s replacement at Acrisure Stadium.
The Steelers’ QB options
As it stands, the Steelers have Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson as senior QBs on their roster, along with rookie Will Howarda sixth-round pick in the 2025 draft. They will be given a chance to impress in minicamp, with all three hoping to have breakout seasons. However, the general feeling is reinforcements are required in the quarterback position.
Four-time MVP Rodgers would appear to fit the bill but has yet to commit to the Steelersas confirmed by NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero. Another insider, ESPN’s Dan Graziano, has voiced his belief that while discussions between the two parties have already dragged on for some time, they may yet continue a while longer. “I think we have a couple more months of this unless Aaron Rodgers makes a decision soon.”
The logical view is that the longer the saga goes on, the less likely the Steelers and Rodgers, now 41, are to come to an agreement. In that case, Pittsburgh would likely turn their attention elsewhereunless Rudolph, Thompson or Howard exceed expectations in minicamp.
For Ray Fittipaldo, who covers the Steelers for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, one man stands out: “Carson Wentz is still out there. Maybe one or two other vets like him. I think they would try to get one of those guys before keeping Skylar Thompson, but Thompson does have some experience, just not a lot.”

Picked second by the Eagles in the 2016 draft, Wentz was the starting quarterback for Philadelphia for five straight seasonshelping the franchise win Super Bowl LII (although he suffered a season-ending injury in week 14 in 2017).
The 32-year-old also was an ever-present for the Indianapolis Colts in the 2021 season but has since seen his stock fall, starting only nine games in the last three years for the Washington Commanders, Los Angeles Rams and Kansas City Chiefs.
