As the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, Dak Prescott receives a lot of criticism as it is, but with a 2-5 record in the postseasonit’s even worse. It’s easy to blame the quarterback and oftentimes, the quarterback is the appropriate person to blame for a team’s shortcomings.
But in Dallas’ case, there’s a lot more going on. Tony Romo had the same problems as Prescott before him. And one thing’s remained consistent: Jerry Jones. The Cowboys owner does things a certain way, and he’ll do them that way until he steps down. One former Cowboys player called that detail out as actually the reason for Dallas’ shortcomings.
Brice Butler calls out Cowboys organization
Wide receiver Brice Butler played for the Cowboys for four seasons from 2015 to 2018 and then again in 2019. So, he played with Prescott under center during that time, and he understands quite well what it means to players under Jerry Jones.
Butler spoke on the “Go Long TD” podcast and not only said that Prescott isn’t the problem, but he made the bold claim that no quarterback would be able to thrive in Dallas’ organization – even Patrick Mahomes.
“Dak can take a team to the Super Bowl,” said Butler. “Even if Pat Mahomes is the Dallas Cowboys quarterback and say Dak is in Kansas City, I’d say Dak goes to the Super Bowl at least one time and Pat doesn’t.”
It’s a bold claim – this is taking the blame entirely off Prescott’s shoulders and shifting it to the ownership, coaching, and culture of the team, which have indeed been in need of major changes for a few decades now. Butler points out that the Cowboys don’t take the time to build the proper talent around their quarterback.
His point was that the Cowboys have been unsuccessful for nearly thirty years, and the main reason for that is that Jones cares more about the brand than the actual number of wins. And that’s why the Cowboys are the wealthiest franchise in the sports world, but haven’t won a title since the ‘90s.
