Under President Donald Trump’s administration, there is this idea that America was greater back when people were permitted to be less politically correct and, to put it bluntly, more openly racist. Getting rid of diversity, inclusion, and equity programs and promoting the “good ‘ol days” were just the start.
Recently, Trump even said he’d like the Washington Commanders to go back to their old name – the Washington Redskins. He told reporters he wouldn’t have changed it in the first place.
The Commanders were known as the Redskins from their inception until 2020, when they were faced with pressure from corporate sponsors and fans alike to change it. Many considered the old name to be offensive to Native Americans. They then changed to the “Washington Football Team” for the 2020 and 202q sesaoms until they finally came up with the new name in 2022.
Back in April, Trump said he thought Redskins was a “superior name” and that he spoke to “people of Indian heritage” who were against the name change as well and that he viewed the change as “degrading to the Indian population.” However, it was in 2020 when the President of the National Congress of American Indians, Fawn Sharp, called the name a “racial slur” and the Washington owners “tone deaf”.
“It’s time for the players to rip down that name like it was a statue of a Confederate general in their locker room,” he said.
Does Washington agree with Trump?
The Washington Commanders recently unveiled new uniforms for the 2025 NFL season, and they bear a strong resemblance to their old ones from the team’s previous identity. This, along with cryptic messaging like “History doesn’t fade…it fuels the future,” has sparked speculation that the franchise may be considering a return to its former name.
NFL insider Mike Florio (Pro Football Talk) believes the team is “laying the foundation” for such a move.
“The Commanders currently seem to be inching toward a possible embrace of the name they abandoned five years ago,” wrote Florio. “The new uniforms — which look exactly like the Super Bowl-era uniforms but for the “W” in place of the abandoned logo — arrived only days after President Trump made his strongest statement yet regarding his belief that the former name should be the current name of the team.”
“How much of a nudge will it take from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, if the Commanders eventually ask the Commander-in-Chief to push the D.C. Council to approve the new stadium? If, in the end, the President conditions the exercise of his influence on the team changing its name, will Harris do it? He may want to do it. The what is the place where may give Harris all the cover he needs to return to the pre-existing the status quo.”
Though any official plans remain unconfirmed, the timing, coming just days after Trump voiced support for the old name, has added to the buzz and controversy around the idea.
