Unfortunately for any quarterback who wears the star on their helmetthey’re going to be highly scrutinized. For a team that hasn’t won anything of significance in nearly three decades and still calls themselves “America’s Team”, it comes with the territory.
But sometimes the criticism placed on the Dallas Cowboys quarterbacks is a little unfair. Case in point – the latest NFC East QB rankings that placed Dak Prescott below the New York Giants.
NFL QB rankings stir controversy
Dak Prescott had to miss more than half of the 2024 season with a hamstring injury that required surgery. But the year before that, he was the runner-up in MVP voting and had his best career season, leading the league in passing touchdowns (36)and throwing for 4,516 yards and a career-high passer rating of 105.9.
And yet, Big Blue View ranked the Cowboys’ quarterback room as the worst in their division. Yes – even worse than the Giants. Here’s a look at the quarterback depth charts for each of the two teams.
Cowboys QB depth chart:
- Dak Prescott
- Will Grier
- Joe Milton III
Giants QB depth chart:
- Russell Wilson
- Jameis Winston
- Jaxson Dart
- Tommy DeVito
While the order could change for the Cowboys behind Prescott, he is the sure starter. For the Giants, it could be any of them really. Wilson is the one I presume they expect to start, but the 36-year-old had his best season in 2018 back when he was still with the Seattle Seahawks. He’s also playing with his third team in three years. And yet, the ranking criticizes Prescott for his age – 31 – and coming off an injury.
So let’s talk about Winston. The Cleveland Browns decided to bench him too last season, and not because he was injured, but because he threw eight interceptions in three games. And they chose instead to start Dorian Thompson-Robinson. So if you’d rather have him than Prescott on your roster, I question your mental health. (Really nice guy though.)
While Dallas’ backups haven’t proven themselves at the top level, neither have Dart or DeVito. Dart shows promise, but he’s a rookie. Milton III has shown that he has the potential to grow as well. So while this may be an objective argument, it seems like the Big Blue might be experiencing some delusion.
