Quarterback Russell Wilson is now being counted on to help turn around the struggling New York Giants’ franchise. NFL analyst Chris Simms questions his ability to do that, based on a leadership style he says is almost too motivational.
Chris Simms’ warning about Russell Wilson based on his time with Steelers
Early on in Wilson’s NFL career, he led the Seattle Seahawks to multiple postseasons. But with the Denver Broncos and the Pittsburgh Steelers, he faced some struggles with turnovers as well as with teammates not responding well.
After missing the first part of the NFL season last year with the Pittsburgh Steelers due to a calf strain, Wilson hopped back in and had a great run at the start. Unfortunately, it didn’t last and he and the Steelers collapsed when it mattered mostfacing similar issues as with the Broncos.
On a recent episode of Chris Simms’ “Unbuttoned” podcast, Simms touched on Wilson’s connection with his Steelers teammates and how it started to become a challenge when Pittsburgh wasn’t doing as well because Wilson’s positive approach wasn’t what the players needed. They needed to be held accountable.
“I know this: his ability to lead and talk to the players, it falls on deaf ears,” Simms said. “I told you, not only was I hearing it from people that I trust in Pittsburgh, but you could watch TV and see it, where he’d be talking to the guys on the sidelines, and they’d literally be trying to look in the opposite direction he was talking.”
After his struggles to lead the Steelers team to a deep playoff run, there are some concerns that he’s not the man to lead the Giants out of their funk either. That becomes especially complicated when we realize the Giants have a promising young rookie just behind him, waiting to hop in and take his place. Jaxson Dart will be the one whose name the fans start chanting as soon as Wilson shows signs of being an ineffective leader. He’ll have to earn the respect of the Giants’ locker room early.
